Kais Dukes, author of the Qur’an Corpus passes away

Kais Dukes a former PhD student of Leeds University and creator of the Qur’an Corpus ( https://corpus.quran.com/ ) has passed away. His former PhD supervisor Dr. Eric Atwell confirmed this to me.

The Qur’an Corpus was Kais Dukes attempt to capture linguistic aspects of the Qur’an, using ideas from corpus linguistics.

Basically, the corpus is an analysis of the language of the Qur’an.

Not wishing to get into too many technicalities, he was able to (with the help of volunteers from around the world) analyse much of the Arabic of the Qur’an

We use language everyday, and take it for granted. In reality though, it is the intricacy with which language is put together, that gives it, it’s beauty.

The figure above provides just an example of how words fit together.

Although Kais produced this brilliant piece of work, in reality, for the last 1400 plus years, Arabic language scholars already achieved an accurate anlaysis. It could be argued that his work introduces the language of the Qur’an to a wider audience, using a more accesible format.

Kais’s work has provided a platform that can act as a take-off point for researchers and educationalists, and society generally. There is a thirst to understand the meaning of life, and perhaps some of us can extend, and realise the potential of this foundational resource. In reality, I would suggest his work is just a beginning, and needs further validation and development.

I never met Kais Dukes, but we had a few communications via email, coincidentally including in the middle of 2023 when he messaged me asking if I could help him set up a charitable entity.

I pray that Kais’s journey into the next life is full of ease and mercy.

If there are any inaccuracies in what I have said above, or if you wish to add anything, please do.
